Following the dissolution of the Institute of Roofing (IoR) and its members’ integration pathway into the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), the Institute of Construction Management (ICM) recognises that many skilled roofing professionals wish to retain recognition for their specialised expertise within a professional body that values technical competency and practical leadership across the built environment.

To ensure roofing specialists remain represented and supported, the ICM has created a dedicated External Envelope Class of Membership – Roofing Specialism. This pathway enables former IoR members to continue their professional journey within a governance framework that champions construction management, building safety, and compliance excellence.

Why Transition to ICM? Competence & Compliance Under the Building Safety Act

The UK regulatory landscape demands verifiable, independent proof of competence across the entire supply chain. By transitioning to the ICM, your specialised roofing expertise is not just preserved—it is elevated.
 
As an ICM member within the External Envelope Class, your credentials align directly with broader industry frameworks. This includes structured pathways to the PAS 8671:2022 (Principal Designer) and PAS 8672:2022 (Principal Contractor) competence registries, ensuring your roofing management skills are legally recognised under the modern building safety regime.

Membership through this route acknowledges your heritage with the former IoR and welcomes you into a broader professional community — one that integrates your roofing expertise into the wider construction management context.

You can apply for ICM membership based on your proven experience and qualifications. Eligible applicants may be accepted as Affiliate Members, Registered Members (MICM), or Fellows (FICM) within the External Envelope Specialism.

Direct Grade Mapping Pathway

To honour your achieved professional status with the former IoR, the ICM operates a direct transitional mapping framework. While every applicant is individually registered, your previous IoR grade serves as the baseline for your new ICM designation:
  • IoR Student / Affiliate → ICM Student / Affiliate Member
  • IoR Associate (AIoR) → ICM Associate Member (AMICM)
  • IoR Member (MIoR) → ICM Registered Member (MICM) — External Envelope Specialism
  • IoR Fellow (FIoR) → ICM Fellow (FICM) — External Envelope Specialism

How to Apply — Fast-Track Transition Window

Former IoR members can take advantage of a streamlined Fast-Track Transition Window. To minimize administrative duplication, applicants who can provide a copy of their last valid IoR Membership Certificate or proof of a paid IoR subscription from the final operational year will have their historic CPD audit deferred.
