the digital age of construction

The ICM is thrilled to have been invited to share with other professionals within the built environment sector a very special and important milestone in the timeline of the CIC ─ the 35th anniversary from its establishment in 1988 ─ CIC has played a pivotal role in advancing the construction industry by promoting collaboration, knowledge sharing, and excellence among professionals

The Institute of Construction Management are delighted to be rejoining the CIC as an Associate Member effective from 1st January 2024.   The ICM shared this milestone anniversary event together with two other new CIC Members, the National Federation of Demolition Contractors and the Survey Association, This will takes the CIC up to a record 37 Members which is the most member organisations the CIC has ever had and shows the commitment for collaboration amongst the diverse range of professions within our sector.  The ICM is pleased to again be on board the CIC which does collaboratively help to strengthen CIC collective reach and prominence within the sector.

The ICM brings its rich legacy of innovation in construction safety into the CIC network including the landmark launch of a CDM Competence Registry™® in 2018 which laid the foundation for the ICM's commitment to recognising and fostering competence within the construction industry, setting high standards for safety and quality partnering with the global system house of Sysmax on this transformative journey. ICM's legacy in competency recognition, coupled with Sysmax's technological prowess, will reshape the way professionals in the construction industry showcase their expertise and collaborate and entirely aligns with CIC objectivity.

CIC was born from a visionary idea: to unite professional bodies across the diverse built environment sector. In the past three and a half decades, it has evolved into a dynamic network spanning a multitude of disciplines and expertise.  Today, just as in its founding days, CIC remains steadfast in pursuing the same core objectives that shaped its inception to unify voices, foster consensus and enhance industry performance ensuring a wealth of skills and knowledge is readily available to the industry.

CIC Chief Executive Graham Watts commented on this milestone saying, "We are immensely proud of our achievements and the impact we've made on the sector. We owe our success to the support of our many members, and the dedication of our small team. We look forward to continuing our mission to bring the built environment professions together in the years to come.”

Dr Wei Yang, CIC’s Chair also commended our anniversary; “As we celebrate CIC's 35th Anniversary, we reflect on the remarkable journey of CIC and look towards its future. In the coming years, CIC will remain at the forefront of promoting collaboration, knowledge sharing, creative problem-solving within the construction industry.”

CIC PRESS RELEASE

ICM's Original Starting Point ...

The construction industry has undergone a remarkable transformation since 1842, when the original Founder Association laid the foundation for what would eventually become the Institute of Construction Management ...

... from the manual labor and rudimentary tools of those first twenty-five pioneers that included 12 Clerk of Works, 10 Carpenters, and 2 Masons who associated together in 1842 at 9 Conduit Street, Regent St. W to the ICM now stands ready in 2023++ collaborating with others to assist the industry to transition culturally into the current digital age ... this industry has evolved into a dynamic, technology-driven powerhouse - both individual and organisational competence is key to effective transition ...

... the spirit of innovation and resilience that fueled the unique journey timeline of ICM reminds us that progress is not only inevitable but also an opportunity for growth and advancement ...

... now, as the UK transitions 2023++ with the enactment of the new Building Safety Act - and at a time our construction industry struggles to embrace the technology of the digital age as it now must, the ICM continues to build upon the rich legacy of our predecessors, forging new pathways, and constructing a future that reflects the boundless potential of human ingenuity ...

... in this era of cultural change, ICM works its part to ensure the construction industry stands as a testament to the enduring power of vision, adaptability, and determination ...

... now in 2023 establishing a pioneering knowledge partnership between ICM and major global system creator to bring digital innovation to the ICM Competence Register Trilogy™

A transformative collaboration that builds upon both brands’ rich legacy of promoting competence within, among others, the construction industry. Sysmax CEO Peter McAteer and David Jones, ICM Director, are both well known for their passion and leadership on competency, compliance and risk management ─ the new collaboration will build on the obvious synergies ...

David Jones comments:

The ICM has a rich legacy of innovation in construction safety including the landmark launch of a National CDM Competence Registry in 2018 which laid the foundation for the ICM’s commitment to recognising and fostering competence within the construction industry, setting high standards for safety and quality. We are thrilled to partner with Sysmax on this transformative journey. ICM’s legacy in competency recognition, coupled with Sysmax’s technological prowess, will reshape the way professionals in the construction industry showcase their expertise and collaborate.

Peter McAteer adds:

“The partnership between Sysmax and the ICM marks the next phase in this legacy of excellence. Beginning with the Principal Designer Register, Sysmax will employ our technological expertise and cutting-edge, user-friendly platform for professionals to showcase their competencies, connect with peers, and access critical industry resources. This digital innovation will extend to the Principal Contractor and Building Safety Manager registers, culminating in a trilogy of digital solutions that promise to streamline competence validation, foster collaboration, and elevate safety and quality standards within the construction industry.

“We are in a landscape which recognises that even though we’re five years on from the Hackitt Report and progress has been made, we still have a long way to go. The social building supply chain is under scrutiny now more than ever thanks to the Building Safety Act (BSA) which came into effect on the 1st of April 2023 and will have full implementation by October 2023. As the construction industry continues to evolve, the partnership between Sysmax and ICM represents a monumental leap forward in promoting excellence, inclusivity, and safety within the sector.”
